Sustainable Gains in Productivity
What is Sustainable Gains in Productivity?
Sustainable gains in productivity occur when a process, procedure, or shift in behaviour is achieved in an organisation that contributes to improvements in productivity, and the improvements can be maintained without constant outside intervention.
In the business world, organisation change agents are constantly working with organisations to help them improve their productivity.
The elders at HRworkbench have observed these activities, and indeed, have contributed to these activities, over a period of 20 years.
One of the most important observations is that the change agent is mostly someone from outside the organisation, usually a consultant. They are brought in to "fix the problem".
They usually make a change, and in many cases, the change is obvious and can be measured. There are often many changes and they are all implemented in a patchwork manner.
For example, a leadership development program is implemented at the same time as a customer service program with no cross pollination of content. The processes are disparate.
The problem is that once the change agent leaves the scene, the improvements start to slide. The motivating factor to change was the enthusiasm and knowledge of the change agent.
HRworkbench believes that sustainable gains in productivity can only be achieved when, to use a Tom Peters phrase, "the changes become a part of the fabric of the organisation".
To achieve this you must build a culture of change and bring new processes into the organisation that are measurable, are actually measured, and the measurements are acted upon - they become the catalyst for the change movement.
The processes, knowledge, and skills must all fit together and be accessible from one place. They must be seen as part of the organisation's fabric.
How can Sustainable Gains in Productivity be used?
Sustainable Gains in Productivity may include:
- Cultural Change
- Shift in Managerial Focus
- Development of Leadership
- Refinement of Customer Service practices
- Moving Sales People to a Relationship Selling focus
Best Practice for Sustainable Gains in Productivity
At HRworkbench we call our one-stop access point "myWorkbench™".
This is a single place where you can access assessment, measurement, learning, documentation, and performance and development records all on the desktop.
Combine this with a Product range that interlinks and uses commonality of purpose and language, and the building blocks for the change process are in place.
Using myWorkbench, an organisation can create their own competence frameworks and deploy measurement and learning systems based on these frameworks, all from the myWorkbench access system.
