Selection is a component of the recruitment process and involves screening the available pool of high potential candidates through a short list and final selection of the best person for the job.

The recruitment process should be based on a full job description that scopes both the responsibilities for the job, and the personal characteristics, competencies, and experience that will be necessary to complete the job to the required standards.

The recruitment process provides the pool of high potential candidates.

The selection process then involves:

• Initial screening using measurements against the highest rated requirements
• Production of a short list of the best candidates
• Profiling of these candidates using appropriate tools for the position
• Initial interviews using a focussed interviewing technique that concentrates on taking the candidate's thinking into problem solving rather than descriptive, "how would I do that"
• Rating of the candidates at each phase
• Follow up interviews (up to two more for senior positions) that dig deeper into behaviours and explore motives and values
• Ranking the scores of the candidates
• Listing the deficiencies of the candidates and determining whether these characteristics will respond to development or can be managed
• Selection of the most suitable candidate

Is this process costly? Well of course, but isn't as costly as making a mistake and hiring the wrong person.

Quality selection processes should be used for every new staff acquisition, regardless of their level in the organisation.
