e-Learning/Online Learning/Web Based Learning/Web Based Training

What is it?
E-Learning is the deployment of a learning process over the Internet.

E-Learning delivery is an essential component of the modern organisation's training and development strategy.

The cost of traditional training methods is escalating.

Time away from work, travel costs, accommodation and meal costs, venue hire costs, fees for facilitators. all add up to a significant investment.

When the traditional training program is analysed, some 60% of the training is involved in the exchange of new information or knowledge acquisition, 20% in interaction generated from the participants, and the remaining 20% is spent in developing skills (role plays and other action learning).

Whilst cost effective, the online deployment of learning has limitations. It is excellent for exchange of information - that is, knowledge transfer - but is not the most efficient means of transferring that knowledge to changes in behaviour at the workplace.

By adopting a true blended learning approach, the total cost of training can be dramatically reduced, the transfer of learning to changes in workplace behaviour enhanced, and the risks associated with travel and time away from work are minimised.

Blended learning incorporates a variety of learning methodologies such as:

  • Assessment
  • Feedback on performance
  • Goal setting exercises
  • Computer facilitated learning, which is online learning
  • Workplace exercises
  • Discussion Groups
  • Project work
  • Face-to-face training days
  • Reflection
  • Re-assessment and identification of change

How Can it be Used?
E-Learning can be used in any training or development project to improve effectiveness and minimise costs. It is most effective when used as a component of a blended learning process.

HRworkbench can provide you with ready to use blended learning programs, or can develop your material into a full blended learning program for use in your organisation.

Best Practice
Best practice in e-Learning involves the rigid application of adult learning theory.
