Computer Based Training/Computer Facilitated Training

What is it?
Computer Based Training (CBT) refers to instruction on a given skill, where the learning interface is a computer.

Computer Based Training is used to transfer knowledge of situations, processes, skills, and techniques to the learner.

Similar phrases that are sometimes interposed include:

  • Computer Based Learning (CBL)
  • Computer Facilitated Learning (CFL)

When referring to "Training" as opposed to "Learning" it is usually of a technical nature, for example, how to use a machine. Training implies a rote process, a series of steps, whereas learning involves gaining expertise through experience.

When referring to facilitation, the focus changes from the computer to the student. The computer is merely facilitating a process of knowledge acquisition.

At HRworkbench, we use the term computer facilitated learning to take the emphasis away from the computer. The student must feel in control and the computer is a resource to assist with the learning process.

The computer is excellent in the role of Computer Based Training because it:

  • Tells the same story to everyone, thus, consistency is assured
  • Does not have cloudy days where it forgets some of the material to be presented
  • Is patient, it will wait all day or longer for a person to get through a learning module
  • Can be accessed at any time, you do not have to organise a group of people into a central location
  • Can be used to test retention of information in a consistent manner
  • Is relatively inexpensive as a delivery mechanism

How can it be used?
Computer Based Training can be used as a cost effective tool to bring efficiencies to the transfer of knowledge.

It can be used for a wide range of learning and development processes, and if delivered via the internet, it can be readily modified and deployed in an updated form instantly.

Best Practice
Computer Based Training should not be used in isolation.

To gain the optimum effectiveness out of a learning process, the process of blended learning should be applied.

Blended learning combines Computer Based Training with:

  • Assessment tools
  • Workplace exercises
  • Personal activities
  • Group discussions
  • Face-to-face workshops for skill development
  • Coaching
  • Project work

These combine to ensure a transfer of learning to workplace outcomes to deliver sustainable gains in productivity.
