Competence Development

What is Competence Development?
Progressive organisations take competence development seriously.

They know that by defining or adopting competence models for their organisation, they are providing the building blocks on which key Human Resource Management processes can be based. When implementing competence development, the use of automated processes will remove very large administrative loads.

At HRworkbench, all of our online Platforms combine to provide a high quality competence development system.

How can Competence Development be used?
Competence is used as a discipline for defining the structure of jobs in an organisation.

Competence can be used for the following purposes:

  • Building an organisational culture
  • Aligning activities of people with the behavioural desires of the organisation
  • Standardising processes for:

    • Recruitment and selection
    • Remuneration
    • Rewards and recognition
    • Performance measurement
    • Development planning
    • Training needs analysis

Best Practice for Competence Development
The implementation of a full competency development program is a major commitment for an organisation.

It involves creating a description of every job or function within the organisation in terms of the competence model.

It requires the skills of someone experienced in developing competence models, or aquisition of Industry specific models that have been adopted by Industry Bodies.

It is common for organisations to adopt a "core competence model", that is, competencies that apply to all jobs, as a precursor to defining specific job related competencies.
