Team Development
What is Team Development?
In a workplace situation, a team is a group of people who are working together to achieve a common goal.
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, team-building activities were very much in vogue and it was not uncommon for several team-building activities to be in progress in an organisation concurrently.
This surge in activity was a component of the Total Quality Management (TQM) movement, where high performance in teamwork is essential.
One of the problems that emerged during this time was that team-building interventions were completed for the sake of doing it, and not because it was needed.
During that period, a great deal was learned about team-building, and today, whilst not conducted as frequently, is still a very valuable process.
How can Team Development be used?
Teams are used in the workplace where the desired outcome cannot simply be achieved by individuals working together.
The synergy created by a group of people with different skills and knowledge delivers an output greater than the sum of the outputs that can be achieved by the individuals separately - the essence of team performance.
Best Practice for Team Development
HRworkbench recommends that team-building interventions be conducted by skilled facilitators using profiling tools that will build awareness, cohesion, and commitment to common goals within the teams.
